Kindergarten Gets Flouride Treatment

In an ongoing effort to stem rampant dental caries in the Barron, Mexico school population, Friends of Barron recently went into the kindergarten class and treated 40 children with Flouride.

Che Che The Wonderdog helps break the ice

At first the kids regarded the dental team (EDM residents Claire Silk, Jan & Bill Schoen, Heather Anders, Jayne Rupe and Kris Mcguire) warily, but when Kris pulled out the big yellow stuffed dog, Che Che, things changed fast. Che Che’s choppers and oversized toothbrush proved irresistible to the kids who flocked to him to practice brushing.

Many of the children exhibit classic signs of baby bottle mouth, a condition resulting from milk, juice or, more alarmingly, Coca Cola offered to children at bedtime in a baby bottle. The liquid pools in the sleeping child’s mouth and rots the teeth.

FOB is committed to not only treating teeth but educating the mothers to stop this practice.

Benefactors Tour Facility

Friends of Barron was recently able to inaugurate a temporary computer classroom for the Secondary School in Barron due to the generous contribution of computers from Joe & Berenice Oviatt (11 computers) and Dave & Elaine Greiner (7 computers). With a lot of help from the Estrella del Mar IT department member Carlos Mercado and others, the computers were wiped clean, reprogrammed and installed in a regular classroom over in Barron after electrical wiring improvements had been made. The computers are connected to an Internet tower at the school that allows reception of a signal shared by the Barron Elementary School. Using a device residing on EDM’s radio tower located at the gate entrance, the signal is relayed to the elementary school and then on to the secondary school. Students who have never had internet access can now begin to view a whole other world.

As soon as the new computer laboratory is complete, the students will be able to have class without displacing a third of the population every time. Currently, there are three classrooms that house 100 students. When the new computer lab is complete, students will be able to attend class without disturbing other students. The new lab is about half complete. Another $60,000 pesos is required to finish it. FOB has committed to provide matching funds to the people of Barron to finish the classroom. They have raised about $20,000 pesos so far with raffles and collection days out on the highway. As they near their goal, they are now getting bids from local contractors in anticipation of completing the much-needed project.  If you would like to contribute to this project, please contact Dale Lyster (Condo #1117 – 178-0117) or Dick McGuire (Condo #1105  – 178-0105). If you intend to leave a check, please make it out to “FOB CANAM AC”. Because the Mexican banks will not accept corrected checks, please make out the check exactly as indicated and do not have any spelling errors or other corrections. FOB is a registered charitable organization and you will receive a receipt that indicates that the funds went to a Mexican charity.

New Computer Lab

In June, 2016 applications for scholarships will once again go out to the 2016 Ninth Grade graduating class at the Barron Middle School. The scholarship program is in its sixth year of operation and many of the students who were on scholarship throughout high school have now entered University. Several sponsors have continued to support their students in University. As more and more scholarship students successfully complete high school, FOBs emphasis on University scholarships will gradually grow.

FOB also looks forward to benefitting from the recent EDM sponsored Charity Golf Tournament. On January 30 & 31, one hundred sixty-six players took to the links to raise money for four charitable entities, of which FOB was one. Once received, the money will be used to complete the new computer classroom/laboratory for the Barron Middle School.

Bedspread Creation Up for Auction

Of course, financial needs are ongoing. To help raise money for FOB programs, an anonymous craftsperson has donated a beautiful Queen-sized bedspread. It will be auctioned off in the near future.

In another fund raising effort, FOB is offering handcrafted club head covers for sale.  When you order custom club head covers, FOB CANAM AC will donate half the money to the school Project Fund. The balance goes to “La Comadria”, the women who construct the covers. Order form information will be forthcoming in another post.

Sponsors Found, More Needed

Thanks go out to sponsors who heeded the call and took on needy students.  We still have four students needing sponsors; one student from last weeks post that remains unsponsored and three of the students who are seniors in high school who have never had a sponsor. Their scholarships have been covered by the FOB General Fund.

Fatima – Age 16

Fatima graduated in June 2014 and was awarded a scholarship in August. She is now in her second year of high school and is a straight “A+” student. Fatima likes to play football, basketball and volleyball. She is enrolled in high school in Villa Union.

In her essay she writes;

“I want my parents to be proud of me so I can be proud of myself. This scholarship will allow me to finish high school. And with my ability to get good grades, I think I will have a good chance to get into a good University because ultimately I want to become a teacher or a nurse.”

Ricardo Noel – In his last year of High School and Needs a Sponsor

Age 18

Ricardo attends COBAIS #51 in Mazatlan. He is being raised by his grandmother and his sister in Barron and his favorite pastime is to play soccer with his buddies. He wants to get good grades in prep school so he can get into university and study architecture.

In his essay he writes:
“One of my most important decisions is to decide and choose a professional career. I evaluated several options and decided that I really want to study architecture. One of my great motives in deciding to pursue a professional career is my family, consisting of my grandmother and my sister. I want to succeed in my education so I can be somebody in life and so that I can be an important person in my community and so that I can make my family proud of me. I want you to know that this scholarship is very important to me because my economic conditions would not allow be to continue my studies. My sister, who has her own life, is the only one in my family that can help me.”

Daimy Yatziri – In her last year of High School and Needs a Sponsor

Age 18
Daimy is a high “B” average student and likes to hang out with her friends and family and play soccer. She wants to do well in prep school so she can continue her studies afterwards to become a professional criminologist.

In her essay she wrote:
“I know education is one of the most important things in life. It is the primary tool to get ahead in general. But in particular, I like school. My aspirations in life are to continue my studies to become a professional and secure a stable job. My family tries to do everything possible to help me pursue my future studies but they just don’t have the economic resources. But even though they can’t afford it, they insist that I continue my studies. Also, I want to demonstrate to my friends and other people, like the help that this scholarship is offering, with a little bit of financial help, I can make the best of my opportunities and come out ahead.”

Julissa – In her Last Year of High School and Needs a Sponsor.

Age 18

Julissa attends the University Autonomia de Sinaloa  (UAS) where she has maintained an “A” average. Julissa’s goal is to maintain good grades in High School so she can get into a University. She wants to major in Psychology. He father is a farmer and her mother is a housekeeper. She has a sickly young brother.

In her essay she writes:

I am a very responsible person. I am usually very happy and I dedicate myself to my studies. Because of these personal qualities I have always been a good student and have always gotten good grades. I have my heart set on University but I don’t see where the money is coming from because the economic situation in my house is very hard.  My father only earns 1100 pesos a month as a day worker in the fields and my mother can’t work and help with the expenses because she has diabetes and frequent headaches.

If you are interested in sponsoring any of these kids, see Dick (1105, 178-0105) or Dale (1117 178-0117).

Sponsors Needed

The Friends of Barron scholarship program is entering its sixth year. Since its inception in 2010, the program has awarded 57 high school scholarships and 10 University scholarships.  To date, 33 of our scholarship students have graduated from high school and of those, 42% have gone on to University. Over the years, most of our scholarship students have been directly sponsored by individual donors. Fifteen sponsors are currently active in the program. Despite the success of our sponsorship program, we still need sponsors.  The annual cost of a scholarship for the 2015 -2016 school year is $600 USD for all students who commute from Barron. University scholarships vary with the cost of the chosen curriculum, anywhere from $700 USD to $1200 USD per academic year. The money is awarded to the students only after they submit their quarterly report cards that reflect at least a “B” average. Students who do not achieve a “B” average go on probation. They out of the program if the average does not recover by the next grading period. Students need support until they graduate, normally a three year obligation, but that is not a mandate. No matter how much you contribute, you will be supporting qualified, motivated students in their quest to better themselves and their community. Make your payment to FOB CANAM AC please send a check made out to “FOB CANAM AC” (it has to be exact) to either Dale Lyster (Condo 1117) or Dick McGuire (Condo 1105/1106). In return, you gain contact and perhaps friendship with a local family. Or just donate!

For the current academic year, we still have six high school kids who lack a sponsor.

Alondra – Sponsored by Ken and Jan Clarence

Age 14

Alondra graduated the Barron middle school in June, 2015 with a “A” average. Based on her grades and the the quality of her essay, she was accepted into the scholarship program in August, 2015. Now fifteen, Alondra is currently enrolled in high school in Mazatlan.

In her essay she writes:

“I really need this scholarship because there are three kids in my family. I am the oldest. My family doesn’t have much money. My father is a day worker in the fields and my mother does not work because one of my sisters has special needs and my mother has to care for her. She used to attend a special education school in Mazatlan, but for lack of money, she has to stay home. I have big dreams to be a school teacher and maybe even through my education to get a doctor’s degree. I am not certain what I want to study but nursing and psychology are high on my list.

Rodolfo – Sponsored by Bill and Jayne Jackson

Age 14

Adolfo graduated in June with an “B+” average. He now attends high school in Mazatlan.

In his five-page essay he writes:

If FOB offers me this scholarship, it would be my only opportunity to continue my studies and ultimately meet my objectives. There are five kids in my family. I have two little brothers; one that is 1 yr old and another that is two. We are a family that lives day-to-day. My father does not have a salary. We get by on the little bit of money that my father makes. It makes me really sad because many times there is not sufficient money to pay the basic costs of living. My father has a really hard time supporting the family. And for these reasons I see the importance of education for myself because someday I want to get ahead. I’ve never had the opportunity to receive any kind of help with my studies. And if you award me this scholarship, I promise I will not fail. Ultimately I would like to enter University and become a Naval Engineer.

Jesus Abraham – Sponsored by Glenn Long & Bette Millar Long

Age 15

Jesus graduated with his class in June and now attends high school in Mazatlan. He likes to play baseball and he wants to become a veterinarian.

In his essay he writes:

I’m a very responsible person. I have always made good grades in school. I know that going to high school in Mazatlan is going to be a big change for me. But I know I can do it. If you agree to award me this scholarship you have my word that I will work as hard as I can to maintain a good grade average. I, Jesus, promise you that I will finish high school and after high school I would like to pursue a professional career and at the same time, continue to play baseball because I am good at that sport. I want to be a veterinarian because I love animals. I’m disturbed by what I see as many animals face extinction because Humans don’t value the fauna.

Rosalinda – Sponsored by Dave & Elaine Greiner

Age 15

Rosalinda graduated last June from Barron middle school with an “A” average. She was awarded a scholarship in October, 2015. She attends CONALEP in Mazatlan.

In her essay she writes:

My aspirations are to prepare myself to become what I really want to be. But first I know that I have to finish high school. And only after that can I pursue a University degree in Hospitality and Tourism. Having that degree I can then study to be what I’ve always wanted to be since I was a little girl. And that is, an international chef. I dream of traveling to Madrid, Spain and meeting Omar Pereney, one of the World’s great chefs. I want to also meet a great man, get married and have two sons. I realize that right now at my age, these are all just dreams, but I need to dream.

All of these scholarships have been awarded on a provisional basis pending our ability to find sponsors for these four kids. All are maintaining a “B” or better average in high school. If we cannot find a sponsor by March, the kids will be dropped from the program.

The following two students were awarded scholarships in August of 2014 and we have yet to find sponsors for them. Each is in her second year of high school and each is maintaining a “B” or better grade average.

Amiaramy – Sponsored by Sandy Vernon

Age 16

Amairamy likes to play football and volleyball and she wants to be a dentist so that “one day, I can help my parents and my community like FOB does.” She has a straight “A+” average.

In her essay, she writes:

The only way for me to succeed and achieve my objectives to to get a good education. I consider myself to be a kind, sensitive and responsible daughter, and I always try to be one of the best students. My family of five is poor. My parents are farmers and they both work hard when there is work. But they only finished primary school. I have a brother in the fifth grade and another brother in his third year of high school. And now with me in high school, this is a real financial strain on my family. So I really need this scholarship.

Fatima – Age 16 Needs a Sponsor!

Fatima graduated in June 2014 and was awarded a scholarship in August.  She is a straight ‘A” student coming out of middle school and has maintained high grades in high school. Fatima likes to play football, basketball and volleyball.  She is enrolled in high school in Villa Union.

In her essay she writes;

I want my parents to be proud of me so I can be proud of myself. This scholarship will allow me to finish high school. And with my ability to get good grades, I think I will have a good chance to get into a good University because ultimately I want to become a teacher or a nurse.

If you have any interest in sponsoring any one or more of these six students, please see Dick in 1105 or Dale in 1117, Estrella del Mar. High school scholarships are $600 USD (50% of total cost) for one academic year. The school years runs from August to June. For more details on the scholarship program, please visit.

FOB Dental Clinic Update

Smile ChartAfter three years of FOB’s dental study, preliminary examination of the data reveals a distinct upward trend in the dental health of the Barron Elementary School students. Every class shows an upward slope when compiling the percentage of kids with cavity free mouths.  Congratulations must first go to the students and their parents. They have paid attention to the repeated educational programs, incentivizing contests and stern lectures delivered in a variety of ways by FOB volunteers. Secondly, recognition must also go to EDM resident, FOB volunteer and retired Registered Dental Hygienist Claire Silk who started the program and spearheads the ongoing effort.  Her group of dentists and dental hygienists from Colorado, New Mexico and Oregon have three times arrived en mass to treat every willing kid at the school, some 220 kids a year. The amazing part is that the kids are not only willing, but excited to go the dentist. What an achievement! Next year will be no exception.

Additionally, another EDM owner, Todd Kaminsky DDS intends to assist with the annual Fluoridation Clinic held in January and perhaps an adult clinic. Together we are making a difference!

Medical Clinic Wraps Up

The second annual free medical clinic sponsored by Friends of Barron has come to a close. Our staff was very pleased with the turnout and pleased with the good they were able to do for the Barron population. We were able to successfully treat a variety of ailments from diabetes to arthritis, the most serious of which included a blocked ureter, rectal bleeding, heart arrhythmias, blurred vision, loss of vision and joint pain.

Many ailments could be treated using the donated and purchased pharmaceuticals but ten of the more serious cases were referred on to the co-operating Mazatlan doctors who will treat them for free and make sure they are directed to another place where they will receive appropriate and timely treatment.  Money to support the clinic was raised at a “Meet the Medical Team” Taco Party held, Wednesday, March 18 at the Estrella del Mar Phase One Palapa. Over 10,000 pesos was raised from the EDM residents and more than $15,000 was raised privately to support the medical staff and stock the pharmacy. This would not have been possible without the

Dr Bonnie explains the basics of diet & nutrition to the class

In addition to the medical clinic itself, Friends of Barron was able to offer a lecture on Healthy Living, presented by Bonnie & Greg McGuire. One obvious health concern for Barron residents is obesity induced diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. In an effort to head these serious health issue off at the pass, the lecture included basic information as well as a worksheet to calculate the present caloric intake of the participants. Using a simple procedure, Greg & Bonnie were able to demonstrate that a daily diet that includes 10 to 12 tortillas is not a diet that leads to weigh loss.

This year we offered an evening session to allow men & women who work long days in the fields to attend the clinic and a Saturday session. In all, we were able to treat 188 patients over the four-day long clinic.

The Saturday session included the help of Mazatlan Doctor Enrique Prado. He assisted with the Saturday morning session seeing patients and referring them to available resources.  FOB also appreciates the assistance of Dr Susana Pedrero who offered to treat patients in need of dental procedures for free. Thanks must also be extended to Dr Jose Murillo, a Mazatlan pharmacist, Dr Miguel Patino and Sr Juan Llausas for providing assistance and support from the local medical community. It must also be acknowledged that Dr Kaasa, Dr Lithgow and Dr Dadosavich donated significant amount of pharmaceuticals and supplies, bringing suitcases full of stuff all the way down from Connecticut and Canada. The cutest part of the clinic was Ryder Dadosavich who assisted his father at the clinic with unflagging enthusiasm, running errands, building blank medical records and dispensing treats, toys and T-shirts to children attending the clinic.

Another new component to the medical clinic was a “Caries Free at Three” program instituted by Claire Silk, an EDM resident and retired dental hygienist.  She spent Friday afternoon treating children too young to be included in the all kindergarten clinic she conducted the week before.  The goal is to educate the mothers about proper brushing techniques and sugar at night to prevent caries before they start.
