Scholarship Program Update

2010 – 2011 School Year Scholarship Winners (the original group)

In May of 2010, scholarships were awarded to 15 Barron secondary school graduates. The scholarships each amounted to $10,000 MN and were to provide support for these students to attend preparatory school in Mazatlan. Five payments of $2,000 MN each were to be made to the parents of these students at regular intervals throughout the school year. Students had to present acceptable grades and attendance records to receive payments. Of the original 15, two students were dropped from the program in November, 2010 for lack of adequate grades. At the end of 2010 – 2011 school year, six of the 13 students were selected, based on grades and attendance, to continue on the scholarship program for the 2011 – 2012 school year. Of the remaining seven students, four were dropped from the program; two had inadequate grades and two got married and dropped out of school. The last three students had C+ averages for the 2010 -2011 school year and were placed on probation for the first quarter of the 2011 -2012 school year. If they can bring their grades up to a B average by November, 2011, they will be retained in the program.

Scholarships for this group are worth $6,000 pesos MN, paid in three installments (Nov 15, 2011, Feb 15, 2012, and May 15, 2012). As always, the Scholarship Committee will approve each payment based upon grades and attendance records.

2011 – 2012 School Year Scholarship Winners

In May, 2011, the Scholarship Committee received 29 applications from Barron secondary school graduates. Eight students were selected for scholarships based on their grades, attendance records and the quality of their application and essay. The value, payment procedures and schedules for these scholarships are the same as for the original students, described above. All students from the original group were adopted by scholarship donors. The eight new scholarship winners are hoping for your continuing support. Please go to the Adopt-A-Student tab (at the top of the page) to review the biographical information for our new scholarship winners. Friends of Barron thanks you for your past support.

Scholarship Donations Rolling In

Friends of Barron would like to thank our most recent donors: Claire Silk ($250), Dale & Lynda Lyster ($600), Keith & Trish Prosser ($500) and Sunny Wong ($600). Watch this space for the 2011 – 2012 school year scholarship applicants. We have eight new scholarship recipients, as well as the existing 13 scholarship students for the upcoming school year.

More Donations Arrive

Our thanks go out to Sam Perricone and Jim & Frances Barnes for their generous donations to the Friends of Barron Scholarship Fund. With their combined support, FOB will be able to support another qualified student from the 2011 graduating class of the Barron Secondary School as well as the Barnes’ continuing support for a 2010 graduate. Details on these new students are being processed right now and their bios will soon be posted on this website. So look for it.

Donations Rolling In

Donations for the Friends of Barron Scholarship Program that sends Barron kids to high school in Mazatlan have begun to arrive in anticipation of the new school year which starts in August, 2011. Rita Pacheco, Dick & Kris McGuire, Dale & Lynda Lyster, Bob & Julie Wallace and John Watson have all agreed to fund the student they adopted in 2010 for the 2011-2012 school year. Other donations by Bob & Pat Tieken and Jerry & Geri Soukup will help to fund scholarships for additional students.

Friends of Barron has consulted a notario to evaluate the possibility of establishing FOB as a registered Mexican non-profit organization. In the coming weeks we hope to gain an understanding of the process and will keep you updated on our progress.

Update on School Construction Projects

Friends of Barron just donated $9500 MX to match kindergarten parents’ work and donations to complete the new classroom at the Barron kindergarten. Funds were used to buy bookshelves, coat racks, teacher’s desk, a whiteboard and a wall-mounted television. The parents painted the classroom, leveled and graveled the ground outside the classroom and donated miscellaneous furniture to finish the job.

The project to build a new computer classroom for the secondary school started in 2010 with FOB helping the school to raise $25,000 MX to obtain a government match of $25,000 MX to begin the project. By August of 2010, foundation and walls were up. The 2011 fund raising effort to complete the computer classroom with roof, doors and windows raised another $25,000 MX ($15,000 MX raised by student families in Barron and $10,000 MX contributed by FOB). The money was deposited with the Mexican government with the expectation of winning another $25,000 MX match. With these $50,000 new construction pesos, the families of Barron hope to see the computer classroom finished before the next school year begins in August 2011. Once the building is complete, the Mexican Government is offering to outfit the classroom with 30 new computers.

2011-2012 Scholarship Program Update

The Friends of Barron sponsored scholarship program for high school students living in Barron has begun. Applications for new students have been distributed and will be due back May 6, 2011. At that time the selection committee will begin deliberating and will choose ten new candidates. Last year’s thirteen scholarship winners’ grades and attendance records will also be reviewed at this time and their scholarships conditionally renewed.

Special thanks go to our dedicated parent/teacher committee (Laura Isabel Zambada Aguirre, Maria de Refugio Velarta and especially Manuel Rodriguez Lopez) for their continued efforts throughout the school year to administer and maintain the program. Our thanks also go out to all of the donors who adopted Year One students. Their names and associated students can be found on the “Adopt-A-Student” page (just click the Adopt-a-Student tab at the top of this page). If you are interested in adopting a Year Two student or renewing your commitment to Year One students, please let us know immediately.

On another note, the parent/teacher committee sponsored a picnic for the Year One scholarship students at Don Manuel’s ranch last week. The committee met with the students and their parents and the students presented personal letters addressed to each of their donor parents. The letters are now being translated and will be distributed to each of the donor parents in the coming week.

If you are interested in reading the English version of the scholarship application and the program description and rules, just scroll down. We have two sets of each as the Year One Students are governed differently than the Year Two students. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please contact Dale Lyster (dlyster@shaw.ca) or Dick McGuire (richardmcg@aol.com).

Silent Auction Brings in Much Needed Funds

The recent Fiesta Gala and Silent Auction resulted in the addition of over $8000 USD to the coffers of Friends of Barron. We are very pleased that the residents of Estrella del Mar (EDM) were so willing to show their support for the schools and children of Barron. We have yet to hear from the EDM Charity Golf Tournament supervisor about how much they will be able to contribute this year. Last year and the year before, EDM’s contribution exceeded that of the residents. Indeed, the discussion at the Lorena Ochoa press conference indicated they intend to contribute and we look forward to that.

Our hope is to be able to continue to support the 13 students that entered the scholarship program last August as well as take applications from this year’s secondary school graduating class. Our capital improvement projects are continuing. The elementary school new classroom is nearing completion and the secondary school’s new computer classroom is making progress. A complete accounting report is in the works.

Friends of Barron will continue soliciting donations for the upcoming school year. If you would like to contribute, please contact us at either friendsofbarron@aol.com or krisvadale@aol.com. You can either contribute to the general fund or adopt a specific student. We have updated all the students’ profiles. Simply click on the ‘Adopt A Student” tab at the top of http://www.Friendsofbarron.blogspot.com and scroll thru the list. Your donations are best received via check but we can also accept PayPal if you are willing to add the 3% surcharge to your total.

On another note, the Barron elementary school has invited us to the annual Springtime parade. The children will all be dressed at flowers and animals and the parade (“desfile”) will begin at 9:30 am on Friday, March 18th. It should be terminally cute so bring your cameras. You will be able to see the new classroom as well.

Silent Auction Update

Due to a paucity of folks interested in online bidding as well as a paucity of suitable computers, Friends of Barron announces that only a few items (up to 10) will be available for online bidding. The choice is up to you. If you would like to bid on a certain item, let Kris know ASAP and we will try to accommodate your wishes. Bidding by Sealed Bid is still an option. Simply contact Kris at krisvadale@aol.com to place your bid. Sealed bids must be received by 5pm, Saturday March 5. You will be notified if you are the winner.

Donations Received! Thanks Due.

Many thanks to Rita Pacheco and Bob & Julie Wallace for their generous donations of $1000 USD and $300 USD, respectively. These much needed funds will be used to help support the preparatory school scholarship program and ongoing construction projects at the Barron Kindergarten and secondary schools (see update)
