Silent Auction Brings in Much Needed Funds

The recent Fiesta Gala and Silent Auction resulted in the addition of over $8000 USD to the coffers of Friends of Barron. We are very pleased that the residents of Estrella del Mar (EDM) were so willing to show their support for the schools and children of Barron. We have yet to hear from the EDM Charity Golf Tournament supervisor about how much they will be able to contribute this year. Last year and the year before, EDM’s contribution exceeded that of the residents. Indeed, the discussion at the Lorena Ochoa press conference indicated they intend to contribute and we look forward to that.

Our hope is to be able to continue to support the 13 students that entered the scholarship program last August as well as take applications from this year’s secondary school graduating class. Our capital improvement projects are continuing. The elementary school new classroom is nearing completion and the secondary school’s new computer classroom is making progress. A complete accounting report is in the works.

Friends of Barron will continue soliciting donations for the upcoming school year. If you would like to contribute, please contact us at either friendsofbarron@aol.com or krisvadale@aol.com. You can either contribute to the general fund or adopt a specific student. We have updated all the students’ profiles. Simply click on the ‘Adopt A Student” tab at the top of http://www.Friendsofbarron.blogspot.com and scroll thru the list. Your donations are best received via check but we can also accept PayPal if you are willing to add the 3% surcharge to your total.

On another note, the Barron elementary school has invited us to the annual Springtime parade. The children will all be dressed at flowers and animals and the parade (“desfile”) will begin at 9:30 am on Friday, March 18th. It should be terminally cute so bring your cameras. You will be able to see the new classroom as well.

Silent Auction Update

Due to a paucity of folks interested in online bidding as well as a paucity of suitable computers, Friends of Barron announces that only a few items (up to 10) will be available for online bidding. The choice is up to you. If you would like to bid on a certain item, let Kris know ASAP and we will try to accommodate your wishes. Bidding by Sealed Bid is still an option. Simply contact Kris at krisvadale@aol.com to place your bid. Sealed bids must be received by 5pm, Saturday March 5. You will be notified if you are the winner.

50/50 Draw a Success – Bill Foster Wins!!

The recent 50/50 Draw at the Super Bowl Party can be called a success. Over 100 people bought tickets creating a pot of exactly $8000 pesos. The lucky winning ticket was selected by Los Delfines head waiter, Gabriel and belonged to La Jolla patio home owner Bill Foster. Perhaps ennervated by the impending Green Bay Packer win, Bill generously donated his winnings to the Friends of Barron general fund. This will enable the foundation to continue its scholarship program which helps send 13 Barron youth to high school in Mazatlan as well as helping to complete the secondary school computer lab. Thank you Bill Foster and all of you who bought tickets.

Fall Progress Report

Scholarship Program
With the recent generous donation of $9600 pesos by Sonny Wong, we have now raised almost $97,000 pesos towards our goal of $150,000 pesos to fund the 2010-2011 scholarship program to send 15 Barron students to preparatory school in Mazatlan. Thanks so much for your generosity.

Each of 15 student parents received scholarship payments of $2,000 pesos in August and October of 2010. Parents are required to present grades and proof of attendance for their students before payments are made. The next payments will be distributed 15 Jan 2011.

Computer Classroom
Friends of Barron donated nearly $24,000 pesos toward construction of a new computer classroom at the secondary school. The total budget for this project is estimated to be around $250,000 pesos. The Barron community (including the FOB contribution) and the Mexican Government match amounted to about $100,000 pesos in funding for this project for 2010. The money was used to complete foundations and walls for the new classroom. Fundraising will continue for this project in 2011.

Library
The library, located in the Barron primary school, opened to the public in March, 2010. FOB funded a 6 month position for a librarian to maintain a regular schedule to keep the library open outside of school hours. In December, we will review the usage and public interest in the library.

50/50 Fundraiser Raises $9500 Pesos

The winners of the 50/50 Draw are Don and Barbara VanSickle and Robin and Peggy Roher of Stone Island. Their share of the $19,000 peso Barron School Fundraiser is $9,500. Congratulations. Barron only needs to raise another $12,000 by March 15 to meet its goal of a classroom for their computers. Think of how happy those kids will be when they can actually use those computers.
