Secondary School Project Update

The effort to plan and build a computer classroom at the secondary school passed its first milestone last week when the Sinaloa School System’s Quality Schools Program matched the $25,000 pesos raised by Barron Schools and Friends of Barron. This was a joint effort between the FOB Program and the Community of Barron. Barron hosted a Valentine’s Day Dance and a raffle to raise $11,000 pesos and FOB used the funds raised at the Super Bowl Sunday 50/50 Draw as well as a portion of the Silent Auction proceeds to push them over the goal line. Plans for the new classroom have already been provided and efforts to secure a construction bid are underway. The next round of funding for the project will begin in the fall of 2010.

Kindergarten Project Update

The Friends of Barron 2010 project to improve the kindergarten water and electrical systems has been completed. Last week, the “Fathers of the Families” completed the project by clearing away the construction debris, leveling the site and spreading the pea gravel hauled in using Friends of Barron funds. Thank you to the Fathers who contributed their time and effort and thank you to our donors.

Library Gets New Books

The Barron Public Library located at the primary school, was able to procure new books last week. Representatives of the library attended the annual book fair held at the Plazuela Marchada and purchased about $200 worth of books for the library. Additionally, the furniture has been delivered and they expect to open the library to the public within a few weeks. If you have ideas as to how to procure books in Spanish at all reading levels, please contact Friends of Barron at FriendsofBarron@aol.com.

School Supplies for Barron Arrive

Friends of Barron has received a generous amount of school supplies from Linda and Joe Day. Joe hauled two filing cabinets and two large boxes of pencils, paper, folders, crayons and rulers down from his home in Orange County, CA. The goods were delivered to the Barron secondary, primary and kindergarten schools last Tuesday. The teachers were very pleased. Thank you Joe and Linda Day!

Barron Delfines Team Photo

The Barron “Delfines” are ready to go! Ken Cosgrove sent in this wonderful photo of the Barron Little League Team dressed in their new uniforms that were a gift from the Cosgrove family. Don’t they look great? Ken is standing next to the team coach, Luis de Silva. Luis’ wife, Ana is hiding behind the back row with their youngest son in arms. I will try to get the kids’ names and positions. The Delfines play every Sunday. They are an extremely well coached team and should make us all proud. Go Delfines!! Andale!!
