Thank-You EDM!

Friends of Barron would like to thank Estrella del Mar and its Charity Golf Tournament for its kind donation of 40,000 pesos to our charity. This money will go a long way in adding two rooms to the high school in Barron which just opened in the fall of 2016.

If you’d like to know more about this project and other projects Friends of Barron is conducting in Barron, please contact Dale Lyster at DLyster@shaw.ca.

Dental Clinic Passes Milestone

Estrella del Mar resident and retired dental hygienist Clair Silk has passed a milestone. Her original idea of trying to improve the dental health of the children of Barron has succeeded beyond her wildest expectations and she has managed to pass the responsibility of the program to local authorities.

Claire, along with EDM resident Janice Schoen, spend the morning of February 22, 2017 at the Barron kindergarten treating 65 four-, five- and six-year olds with fluoride. This program was initiated three years ago as a supplement to the full dental treatments administered to the entire primary school, a program that began in 2013. Over the course of the program, significant gains have been made in the dental health of the children of Barron.

barron-smile-chartAs you can see from the chart, the dental clinics have happened every year since 2013. We have treated over 14,000 teeth and every year, fewer and fewer of those teeth are decayed. Most significant is the improvement shown by the Class of 2017. These young people have demonstrated meteoric improvement in their dental health, beginning with a mere 12% of students with cavity-free smiles and ending with a whopping 82%  of cavity-free smiles last year. We expect additional improvements in this, their last year of treatment.

The more exciting news is that the town of Barron has also committed to building a medical facility that will eventually supplant our efforts. We fully expect that the medical outreach staff that is in place in Barron now will have suitable housing for future medical clinics and will eventually take over the dental program as well.

Thanks go out to all the EDM residents (Jan & Bill Schoen and Willie Portman) who have helped every year. Pictured below are the students-in-training who assisted Claire and Jan in the fluoride application. It’s interesting to note that two of the four trainees are former Friends of Barron Scholarship students.fullsizeoutput_2f9d

Charity Golf Tournament

Friends of Barron, along with two other charitable foundations, was listed as one of the participating charities for the 2016 Charity Golf Tournament at the Estrella del Mar (EDM)  Resort near Mazatlan, Mexico. We had been the beneficiaries of previous tournaments and received donations ranging from $20,000 to $80,000 pesos. Last year, however, circumstances spun out of control when Mexican President Pena-Nieto decided to visit our resort. His security detail required that the course be cleared so the venue shifted to the downtown course of El Cid. The tournament was well-attended, fielding over 140 players, but even at $5,000 pesos each, the golf professionals at EDM were unable to cover expenses and the charities went begging, more or less.

EDM Management has promised us that this year will be different. In a meeting with Golf Director Jorge Enrique Corral, we have been assured that FOB is to receive top consideration for funds arising from this years’ tournament.

This is a welcome announcement since FOB has recently committed $200,000 pesos toward the construction of the new high school in Barron, matching funds with the community itself and the Mexican government. We hope that you participate in the tournament  this year to help us meet one of our longstanding goals of improving the educational level of the children of Barron. FOB is optimistic that the 2017 Charity Golf Tournament will again be a significant contributor to our ongoing projects in Barron.

CrowdRise Effort Funds Medical Clinic

FOB CANAM Inc. has begun an internet campaign to raise money for the upcoming 2017 Free Barron Medical Clinic, scheduled for the last week of February. To donate to this campaign, please go to CrowdRise.com and search for FOB  CANAM Inc.

barron-5849cacd22a23

Dr Bonnie McGuire and her three Connecticut nurse volunteers, Lisa Brennan, Dawn Martin and Madeline Tirado with two of the medical clinic patients last year.

One hundred percent of all donations will go towards supplies and equipment used at this annual event if you also choose to cover the 7% fee that the website takes. So far, we have been able to secure a defibrillator, a weight scale, glucometer supplies, wound dressings, orthopedic braces, and a variety of other things.  We still need to purchase medications and other expensive supplies so please take the time to access the CrowdRise site and donate. You will receive a letter acknowledging your donation that is suitable for the Tax man as all donations will be deductible in the United States.

Thank you, in advance, for your generosity.

Charitable Status Expands

Friends of Barron is very happy to announce that we have begun the process for tax-exempt status as a 501(c)3 under the United States tax code as of mid-December, 2016.

FOB CANAM has applied to the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for non-profit, tax exempt status under regulations pertaining to 501(c)(3). This is a four step process:

  • 1. Incorporate in the US; done. We are now FOB CANAM Inc.
  • 2. Get a federal ID #; done.
  • 3. Open a US bank account; done.
  • 4. Apply to the IRS for final ruling on tax exempt status; will be done 26Dec16.

While we await IRS approval, FOB CANAM Inc is permitted to operate as a tax exempt organization. To quote the IRS regulation:

“Although donors have no assurance that contributions are tax-deductible for federal income tax purposes until the application is approved contributions made while an application is pending would qualify if the application is approved”.

Tax receipts can only be given to donors after the 501(c)(3) tax exempt status is approved. When approved, donations received during this “pending period” will be tax deductible to the donor retroactive to the date of application (December 26, 2016).
FOB CANAM AC remains a registered tax exempt charity in Mexico. Your donations are legally tax deductible in the US, but only against Mexican source income.
Canadians should check with their accountants regarding the deductibility of donations to either US or Mexican tax exempt charities.

2016-17 Scholarship Students

Our scholarship program is now in its seventh year. Since 2009 we have averaged thirty students per year under scholarship. The program started to support Barron kids who wanted to attend high school in Mazatlan, an expensive proposition when you consider the cost of transportation, uniforms, books and tuition (the Mexican government only provides free education through grade 9). Our program covers about half of these costs, the parents cover the rest. To date over 40 of our scholarship students have graduated high school and many have gone on to university.
FOB now offers university scholarships to those who graduate high school in our program. As of today we have 12 university and 19 high school students under scholarship. Of these 31 students, 22 have sponsors whose generous financial support has provided unimagined opportunities for these worthy students.
Presented on the fobnews.org website are the photos and profiles of the eight 2016 scholarship winners. All are in need of sponsors. Have a look and if you think you would like to get involved in the program contact Dale Lyster (phase 1 condo 117 or dlyster@shaw.ca) or Dick McGuire (phase 1 condo 106 or richardmcg@aol.com). Thanks for your interest and continuing support.

img_0143Jesus Ernesto is fifteen years old and is a freshman at the Unidad Academica in Mazatlan. He enjoys soccer, reading and listening to music. His mother is a single parent since his birth because when his father learned that his mother was pregnant with him, “he didn’t want to have anything more to do with us.  And he left us like we were some simple leaf in the wind. On the other hand, my mother works day and night to keep our household together.  She runs a little seafood restaurant.  My mother has worked hard. My dream is to become a lawyer because I want to be able to help people.”

He was asked in his application to propose a project for his community of Barron. And he says “the trash in and around the Presidio River over in Barron is ugly and needs to be cleaned up. I would be willing to volunteer my time and effort to work on this project twelve hours a week.”

img_0140Nataly is fifteen years old and began her first year of high school in August. In her free time, she likes to play soccer. but for now, she has to get on the bus in Barron at 5:30 every morning and doesn’t get home from high school until 2 or 3 in the afternoon, leaving little time for sport.” I’ve always been interested in education, particularly education of young children. And so my goal is to become an elementary school teacher. I see the teaching profession as a good way for me to help the society I live in.”

Nataly was a “A” student throughout middle school in Barron. For her proposed community project she expresses dissatisfaction withe the condition of the streets in Barron she would happily volunteer 10 hours a week to help set up trash collection and recycling program so people don’t throw trash in the streets.

img_0142April is sixteen years old and is in her second year of high school in Mazatlan where she has has maintained an “A” average through her first year. She graduated from the Barron middle school in 2015 with an “A+” average. April likes to participate in ecological activities in her community and she is a volunteer at the Mazatlan aquarium where she guides kids from Barron, and other outlying communities, visiting the aquarium on tours.

She would like to continue her studies beyond high school and attend a university majoring in industrial engineering, with a minor in foreign languages. Her community project for Barron would consist of improvements to the environmental condition of the community, especially cleaning up trash. She would like to approach this first by giving seminars to local residents as to how they could recycle and keep their community clean. She thinks that if Barron was cleaned up, especially along the river, it would attract tourists that want to kayak on the river, do boat trips, horseback ride, birdwatch, etc.

img_0139 Marco graduated from the Barron middle school in June with a “B+” average. He likes to play baseball and soccer in his spare time. His dream is to become a veterinarian because he loves animals. In his essay, he says he needs a scholarship because, unfortunately, his parents just don’t have the money to send him to school. “For my parents, it’s hard enough to get the money together to live day to day, even though my father works hard, seven days a week and sometimes at night in the fields. My mother is a housewife.”

“My ultimate goal would be to open a veterinary clinic in Barron and take care of displaced animals and animals that don’t have a home. I know that my economic conditions at this time are not very favorable and I’m not sure how I am going to pursue this career. But I am hopeful that I can be successful.”

img_0144

Fatima is in her first year at the Ruben Jaramillo high school in Mazatlan. She is fifteen years old and her favorite pastime is dancing. She attends classes in Barron to learn how to dance at the comisariado. She graduated the Barron middle school in June with a “A+” average. She says in her essay, “from the time I was a little, I have always liked learning new things and I especially like getting to know people and having them confide in me their feelings, what makes them happy, what makes them sad. My ultimate goal is to pursue a career in tourism. But for that, I know that I have to learn English and I will study very hard to learn that language.”

For her community project, she mentions that the way people throw trash upsets her, especially in and around the river.  She proposes to do small clean-up campaigns and to organize small groups of people that can help with these campaigns.  She sees the need to recycle plastic bottles and aluminum cans.  “Right now we don’t have any means to do that. The Barron Plaza needs a lot of maintenance work and the trees need to be taken care of.” She proposes two hours a day “between my studies and my dance classes.”

img_0145Miriam is fifteen years old and she loves music. She plays the guitar and she loves to listen to all different kinds of music.  She graduated from the Barron middle school in June with an “A” average. Her goal is to become a veterinarian because she likes animals and wants to be able to cure them of whatever illness they have. “I really want to continue my studies but my parents can’t help me very much economically. My parents have to struggle to find sufficient money for my school needs. My father works hard but the money that he makes is barely enough for my family to eat and clothe itself.  There is not much left over for my schooling. And in order to help them out and make money for my schooling, I work every Sunday for five hours. I don’t make very much, but at least it’s something.”

For her project, Miriam says, “when I go out for a walk around my community, the various types of economic, social and environmental problems that the community is facing are obvious. I would like to do my best to help reduce these problems. I can see that the environment is contaminated and I propose a program to begin to clean it up. I plan to do this by organizing people and talking to them about not throwing so much trash, and especially not to burn garbage because it contaminates the air. This project would improve our quality of life by not having so much contamination in our environment.”

img_0146Antonia is seventeen years old and is in her second year of high school at the COBAIS in Isla Piedra where she maintains a “B+” grade average. He favorite pastimes are reading and writing and she also enjoys playing soccer. Her goal is to enter University and pursue a career in criminology with a minor in English.

For her community project, she thinks cleaning the place up is a key step toward attracting tourism. She say, “there are many very beautiful places in my community like the river, like the agricultural fields, but they appear spoiled because of trash.”

The Friends of Barron Scholarship program is designed to supplement the cost of going to high school for the kids of rural Barron, Sinaloa, Mexico. Because of the remoteness of the little town, the costs associated with taking the daily  bus to and from school doubles the overall cost. This puts high school out of reach for many of these kids.

These candidates have been selected from the graduating class of Barron middle school on the basis of their scholarship, their personal essay and their proposed community projects.  Friends of Barron will make sure that those candidates who are able to secure a sponsor maintain at least a “B” average at their chosen high school and that they follow through with their proposed project. Scholarship monies are portioned out at the end of each grading period, based upon official school transcripts.

Your donation of $600 USD (that’s less than $20 a week), will send these kids to school where they will have a chance to pursue their dreams. Please reply to this post or contact Dick McGuire (richardmcg@aol.com) if you can help.

Thank you.

Dental Clinic Wraps Up

The 2016 Dental clinic has once again treated every willing kid in the Barron primary school, almost 200 children. Early results indicate continuing improvements in dental health across the board. Thanks go out to Dr Jeff Astroth and his wife Deborah Astroth for motivating and leading another excellent group of volunteers who paid their way here for the opportunity to work in a MASH type clinic. Controlled chaos springs to mind.

Thanks also to EDM resident Claire Silk who ran the show .  Without her this would not happen

Club Head Covers On Sale Now

Finally!   A colorful fundraiser!  A dozen hand-made golf club covers are now on sale at the Estrella del Mar Pro Shop. Prices range from $150 pesos to $500 pesos depending upon the complexity of the cover design. A group of women from Barron will be manufacturing them and half of the proceeds will go to the Barron schools to finish the computer lab and high school.

State of the Charity Letter

Friends of Barron has had the most successful year since we began nine years ago.

Our highlights include:

The Third Annual Medical Clinic successfully treated over 250 residents of Barron.  The new feature this year was free eye glasses donated by the Lion’s Club of New York. There is a major need for reading glasses.  Special thanks to Kris and Dick McGuire and their daughter, Dr. Bonnie Wreschner, who coordinated a team of US doctors and nurses for the 4 day clinic.  Thank you to all those EDM residents who donated their time and condos to the medical team and made their stay at EDM most enjoyable.

The Dental Program is going very smoothly under the direction of Claire Silk. The team of volunteers has enlarged the program to include fluoride treatments of elementary and kindergarten students and is really beginning to make a difference with the dental health of Barron’s children. A team of dentists will offer a dental clinic to residents of Barron in May.  One of our EDM residents, Dr. Todd Kaminsky, is aggressively seeking needed dental equipment to assist the dentists in their work.  Thank you to all the EDM residents who work at these clinics or donated your condos.  Without your support, the dental program would not be the success it is.

The Education component of Friends of Barron continues to be very active. Thanks to the generosity of Scholarship Sponsors, all of our eligible students have received funding and we are fully subscribed.  The emphasis on further education is now showing a trend of more students from Barron going to high school.   We also have 17 graduates pursuing post-secondary opportunities and 10 university scholarships which generous patrons are funding.

Our work at the schools has focused on bringing the Internet to both the elementary and junior high.  A special thanks to Carlos and his IT department at EDM that volunteered their time to set up the classrooms for Internet.  We’d also like to thank Joe Oviatt and family and Dave and Elaine Greiner for their generous donation of computers.

We are partnering with the junior high school to complete their computer classroom presently under construction.  We are also supporting the high school teachers in their application to build a classroom.

Our disappointment includes:

Our major fundraiser has always been the Annual Charity Golf Tournament held at EDM.  Our funding has steadily declined until this year, we received – nothing.  The reasons given were the one-day change of venue to El Cid and the many requests for refunds.  We are disappointed that a golf tournament, using our name to market it, has chosen not to give us any money.

Thank you to all the people who have donated money to Friends of Barron.  Without your support, all these programs would be very limited as you, are now, our only source of funding.

Thank you,

Dale and Lynda Lyster
